Pellet Durability & Fines: Methods and Delivery Acceptance

Mechanical durability and fines answer related but different questions. Ask for both the method and the point in the supply chain where testing took place.

Durability

A durability test evaluates resistance to breakdown under a defined procedure. It is not a promise that transport will produce no dust or broken pellets.

Fines at a stated point

A fines result at the packing line is not automatically a result at your receiving hopper. Agree the sampling point and acceptance limits before shipment.

Make handling part of the specification

Discuss conveying distance, transfer points, storage and feeding with your equipment provider. Record packaging condition and handling observations during the trial.

Record where the result was obtained

Suggested acceptance fields
Measurement pointWhat to retain
Packing / dispatchBatch, durability method, fines method, sampling procedure and test date.
Destination receiptSame shipment reference, receiving sample and packaging observations.
After site conveyingTransfer history and local handling observations; distinguish these from delivery acceptance.

Two methods, two questions

ISO 17831-1 addresses resistance to breakdown under its mechanical-durability procedure. ISO 5370 addresses fines content using a specified sieve method. Keep the two results separately labelled; one percentage cannot stand in for the other.

Use a written acceptance template: “Parameter ___; method ___; sampling point ___; result ___; agreed limit ___; sample reference ___; inspection responsibility ___.” Specify the applicable method edition in the order rather than silently changing it after shipment.

Discuss the handling route

  • Number of transfers between packing and the final hopper.
  • Conveying arrangement and the equipment provider’s restrictions.
  • Inspection method for torn packs and visible dust.
  • Sampling and dispute procedure when loading and receipt results differ.
