Wood Pellet Ash Content: Reporting Basis & Buyer Checklist

Ash content describes the residue under a specified test method. It does not, by itself, establish whether a fuel will cause slagging in your equipment.

Basis and method

Ask whether ash is reported on a dry or as-received basis. Compare like with like and retain the test method with each value.

Ash quantity and ash behaviour

Ash content helps assess the amount of residue to manage. Ash composition and melting behaviour address different questions. Low ash alone is not a guarantee against deposits or clinker.

From report to trial

Discuss the grate, combustion temperature, air control and ash-removal system with the equipment provider. Agree a supervised trial and an observation record before committing to a new fuel.

Use two separate acceptance questions

Residue amount and operating behaviour are different checks
QuestionInformation to request
How much test residue?Ash result, mass-percent unit, dry/as-received basis, test method and sample identity.
How will the boiler handle it?Equipment review of ash removal and, where needed, ash composition or melting behaviour; observations from an agreed trial.

Write a usable acceptance record

Use this blank wording: “For batch ___, sampled at ___ on ___, ash ___ % on ___ basis, tested by ___ using ___; agreed purchase limit ___; action if outside the limit ___.” Leave a field blank until confirmed. The test method defines the measurement; it does not supply your equipment’s acceptance limit.

Compare the result to the written order requirement before accepting it. If two quotations use different bases, ask for comparable laboratory results instead of ranking them by the printed percentage.

Include residue in the cost discussion

  • Record how your receiving site handles and removes ash.
  • Ask who will observe deposits, cleaning intervals and interruptions during a trial.
  • Obtain site-specific disposal and maintenance costs before calling fuel-price savings operating savings.
  • Do not infer low ash or freedom from slagging from pellet colour.
